  • Curriculum Integration and Lifelong Education

A Contribution to the Improvement of School Curricula
    • 1 Edición
    • James B. Ingram
    • Inglés
Curriculum Integration and Lifelong Education: A Contribution to the Improvement of School Curricula highlights the need to improve the school curriculum from the perspective of lifelong education. Functions, categories, components, and other elements of curriculum integration are discussed, along with different patterns of implementation under the various categories of integration, their objectives, preconditions, conclusions, and implications. A gradually developed, research validated theory of articulation in education is described. Comprised of seven chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the relationship between lifelong education and curriculum integration, their common purposes, and possible means of mutual support. The discussion then turns to the essential meanings of the concept of curriculum integration and the different ways in which it can be operated; educational purposes served by curriculum integration; and the ways in which curriculum integration affects teaching methods. The principles of integrative learning and the practice of integrative teaching are considered. The effects of integration on school organization and its role in social change are also explored, along with some of the principal problems posed by curriculum integration and its prospects in the educational enterprise. The final chapter evaluates the place of subjects and integration in lifelong education, and views curriculum integration from the larger perspective of integration in life, thus giving it a personal and community focus and not just an educational one. This book is intended primarily for curriculum specialists, educators, and interested researchers.

  • A Book of Russian Idioms Illustrated

    • 1 Edición
    • M. I. Dubrovin
    • Inglés
A Book of Russian Idioms Illustrated highlights the role of Russian idioms in the historical development of the Russian language and how mastery of these idioms can bring about deeper understanding of the language. The book identifies the types of idioms that are discussed, and then states that phraseological fusions are word combinations whose meaning cannot be deduced from the meaning of their elements, while phraseological unities are word combinations whose meaning are partly dependent on the connotation of their individual words. The idioms are arranged alphabetically as units, and each entry is composed of a Russian idiom with its transliteration, literal translation, and explanation. English equivalents are also provided. The text underscores the use of pictures to depict the meaning of idioms and to illustrate their real meanings. The illustrations are presented in a humorous manner, showing the influence of humor in Russian idioms. The manuscript notes that Russian idioms are greatly of popular origin, hence they practically deal with human relations. The book is a vital reference for English speaking students of the Russian language who are familiar with the essentials of Russian grammar and basic Russian vocabulary.

  • Was There a Fifth Man?

    • Inglés
Was There a Fifth Man? Quintessential Recollections presents the author's personal account of his professional life as an experimental physicist in the service, at different times, of each of the three countries that joined forces at the Quebec Conference in 1943 to produce the atom bomb. The author has been identified, though always in a way which was just short of actionable, with the so-called ""Fifth Man"" of the long-running British spy saga. For his sake and that of his family, he felt duty-bound to set the record straight before myth had time to trespass on history. Making extensive use of dated correspondence and publications, he shows precisely where he was at the times that an individual called ""Basil"" was supposed to have been operating in collusion with Donald Maclean at the British Embassy in Washington. He claims that the misfit between ""Basil"" and himself is epitomized by the fact that when Basil was supposed to be entering the scene in Washington for an extensive sojourn, the author was actually leaving Washington for the United Kingdom.

    • Inglés
Theory of Phase Transitions: Rigorous Results is inspired by lectures on mathematical problems of statistical physics presented in the Mathematical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. The aim of the book is to expound a series of rigorous results about the theory of phase transitions. The book consists of four chapters, wherein the first chapter discusses the Hamiltonian, its symmetry group, and the limit Gibbs distributions corresponding to a given Hamiltonian. The second chapter studies the phase diagrams of lattice models that are considered at low temperatures. The notions of a ground state of a Hamiltonian and the stability of the set of the ground states of a Hamiltonian are also introduced. Chapter 3 presents the basic theorems about lattice models with continuous symmetry, and Chapter 4 focuses on the second-order phase transitions and on the theory of scaling probability distributions, connected to these phase transitions. Specialists in statistical physics and other related fields will greatly benefit from this publication.

S. Kuhn and P. K. Feyerabend. Their philosophy of science is in substance irrationalist. They doubt, or deny outright, that there can be any reason to believe any scientific theory; and a fortiori they doubt or deny, for example, that there has been any accumulation of knowledge in recent centuries. The book is composed of two parts and Part One explains how these writers succeeded in making irrationalism about science acceptable to readers. Part Two explores the intellectual influence that led these writers to embrace irrationalism about science.

    • Inglés
Over the past twenty years there has been a significant increase in underwater activities such as scuba diving which, coupled with the adventure andromance always associated with shipwrecks, has led to rapid developments in the discovery and excavation of shipwrecked material. These shipwrecks are invaluable archaeological 'time capsules', which in themajoriety of cases have come to an equilibrium with their environment. As soon as artefacts on the wreck site are moved, this equilibrium is disturbed, and the artefacts may commence to deteriorate, sometimes in a rapid and devastating fashion. In fact excavation without having conservation facilities available is vandalism--the artefacts are much safer being left on the sea bed. Such famous shipwrecks as the Mary Rose (1545), the Wasa (1628) and the Batabia (1629) have not only brought the world's attention to these unique finds, but have also produced tremendous conservation problems. The treatment of a 30 metre waterlogged wooden hull or large cast iron cannon is still causing headaches to conservators.

Language, Children and Society: The Effect of Social Factors on Children Learning to Communicate investigates the processes involved in the development of communicative skills in young children, in particular as these unfold during the child's participation in social interactions in a variety of everyday, educational situations. For a fuller understanding of these processes, through which the child learns the vast array of communicative skills necessary to function effectively in social contexts, the broad range of situations in which the communicative exchanges are embedded—school, home, community, etc.—are examined. Comprised of 17 chapters, this volume begins by painting a vivid picture of human discrimination and prejudice that touches every child involved in the education process in the United States, a result that can be linked to language ignorance. The discussion then turns to some of the contributions of linguistics to education and some of the problems involved in reaching greater cooperation between linguists and educators. The relevance of developments in sociolinguistics to the study of language learning and early education is emphasized. Subsequent chapters focus on the communicative competence of kindergarten children; children's situational variation and situational competence; sex differences in the language of children and parents; and dialogue, monologue, and egocentric speech by children in nursery schools. This book will be of interest to teachers and students, as well as to practitioners in the fields of educational psychology, psychobiology, psychiatry, linguistics, and childhood education.
