    • 1 Edición
    • V. Bruce
    • P. Sebastian
    • Inglés
Dance and Dance Drama in Education attempts to explain the arts of dance and dance drama as they take place in schools and colleges, and to relate them to other, more familiar creative arts in education. It takes into account the needs of young people in so far as they relate to these arts, and sets out to some extent to observe and to estimate the balance or lack of balance in school curricula, establishing the possible place of dance and dance drama in the education of children. Special attention is given to the place of this work in the curriculum of the Secondary Modern Girls' School, where such arts could play a most important part. The book begins by tracing the history of dance leading to the present place of dance and dance drama in education. This is followed by separate chapters on the language of movement; aims of the teacher of dance and dance drama; the link between the arts of dance and dance drama; and dance and dance drama as therapy. Subsequent chapters deal with movement, dance, and dance drama in primary and secondary schools; and work with students in a teacher training college.

    • Inglés
What Happens in School describes school procedure in England and the philosophies which support it. It attempts to tell a story of what really goes on in the schools and to explain, with an extraordinary sensitivity, the curriculum which is thought to be appropriate at each stage. The result is a pen picture of school life which is typical and representative rather than the rule. The author brings to the subject a lifetime of creative service in the cause of education. The essential humanity of her broad and catholic approach to the schools is reflected nowhere more apparent than in What Happens in School, which contains a distillation of knowledge accumulated over the years. Her book describes the most up-to-date features of schools of all kinds, from the nursery school to the special school. This book was written with the parent, the student, and the interested observer in mind, giving an account of educational practice without overcrowding the text with references and detail. It should be an invaluable guide for those (and particularly parents and students in training colleges and universities) who are seeking a practitioner's commentary on what the schools are trying to achieve.

A Prophet in Two Countries: The Life of F.E. Simon is a narration of the true story of F.E. Simon whose work involved developing nuclear energy for the British during the Second World War. Franz Simon is a Jew born in Berlin and earns his doctorate degree from the University of Berlin. Professor of Mathematics Rudolf Peierls introduces Simon to work related to the war. Simon is then put in charge of all work on isotope separation at the Clarendon. The system Simon develops for gaseous diffusion turns out to be the most practicable among the many other methods, and this becomes adopted in many factories. After the war, he is awarded the C.B.E. and he publishes many papers before his death on October 31, 1956. Researchers, students, and academicians involved in British history and readers with general historical and biographical interest will find this book a pleasant reading.

Accounting Principles and Practice describes the principles and conventions which provide the structure of Accounting practice. Many of the questions are taken from the past examinations of the Royal Society of Arts, the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants, the Society of Incorporated Accountants, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. This book is divided into 19 chapters and begins with a brief introduction to the double entry system of accounting. Considerable chapters are devoted to the Accounting techniques concerning the management of different types of accounts, receipts, payments, and expenditures. This book teaches social work supervision by adapting general education principles to certain educative tasks and problems. The lessons contained involve teaching and helping when casework and supervision are analyzed together. The book presents how casework analysis is also teaching and how supervision is enabling and transferring skills and knowledge to the student. Still, the author relies on generalizations acquired from actual and individualized social work in the field. Case studies and records are presented, and discussions of theory are secondary to actual records of supervision. Different cases are given as examples showing the process of recording, analysis of the student's skills, and monitoring of progress to the minimum required professional standards. The use of the student's recording practice as a teaching aid is then explained. The supervisor-tutor relationship toward the student is analyzed for the tutor's objective is to be an educator. More clarification on the problem of their roles is then explained. This reference is suitable for social workers, public service administrators, and, to some extent, for public health workers who interact with members of the community.

    • Inglés
Awakening the Slower Mind deals with the education of and teaching special-needs children. More particularly, this book concerns children in special schools for the ""educationally subnormal,"" whom the author differentiates from the ""ineducable"" child. The first part of this book discusses these children by noting conditions before and during their birth and the background environment of immigrant children and school transferees. The second part of this text is a discussion on the educational system as to how it affects these children, and discusses when the child with difficulties cannot keep up with his teachers, with the other students, and with the system. In a highly industrialized country, literacy becomes an important tool for communication. By making these special students appreciate the value of using language properly through the teacher's efficient use of expressive arts and similar activities, their personality can develop and grow, to the point that they will learn to appreciate the value of learning appropriate and correct language skills. The author points out that in this way, these children will become functionally literate. This book is recommended for school administrators for special learning institutions, school counselors, education majors, pediatricians, and parents of special-needs children.

  • Group Theory in Quantum Mechanics

An Introduction to Its Present Usage
    • 1 Edición
    • Volker Heine
    • D. Ter Haar
    • Inglés
Group Theory in Quantum Mechanics: An Introduction to its Present Usage introduces the reader to the three main uses of group theory in quantum mechanics: to label energy levels and the corresponding eigenstates; to discuss qualitatively the splitting of energy levels as one starts from an approximate Hamiltonian and adds correction terms; and to aid in the evaluation of matrix elements of all kinds, and in particular to provide general selection rules for the non-zero ones. The theme is to show how all this is achieved by considering the symmetry properties of the Hamiltonian and the way in which these symmetries are reflected in the wave functions. This book is comprised of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the necessary mathematical concepts, including representations and vector spaces and their relevance to quantum mechanics. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dickens Entertain at Home presents an account of the life of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dickens told in a series of parties, or "Occasions", given in their own homes. With each is given the lists of distinguished guests; a Victorian Menu taken from Kate Dickens's book What Shall We Have for Dinner?; and a matching one for use today. Recipes for carrying out both types of Menu follow each "Occasion". The book begins with the first dinner party of their married life in 1836 and ends with the completion of the book in 1852. Each chapter follows a quartet theme, with a repetition of four pages right through to the end. The first page of the quartet gives the date of the party (sometimes approximately), the home at which it was given, the guests present, and the life story. The second and third pages are devoted to matching Menus and recipes; and the fourth is an extract from Dickens's own works, chosen by his great granddaughter, Mrs. Stuart McHugh.

John Evelyn and His Times presents an account of the life and works of diarist John Evelyn. Evelyn came to manhood when the struggle between King Charles I and his people was tearing the country apart. He was a scholar, a historian, an expert horticulturist and forester, a connoisseur of pictures, an authority on architecture, painting, engraving, and medals. His diary is a masterpiece in English literature, and his book on trees, Sylva, is a work of national importance which gave an enormous stimulus to afforestation in Britain. His diary was written, in a very small, close hand, over a period of 56 years, and it is not strictly a book of confessions; he rarely attempted to unburden his soul. Everything was set down with reserve, restraint, and an admirable serenity. Evelyn was acquainted with kings and queens, ambassadors, noblemen, statesmen, bishops, and archbishops, and such men constantly sought his advice. Yet he remained to the end a modest and unassuming countryman.

Guide to the Sixth Form is a book that addresses the educational needs of sixth formers. The book starts by introducing the influence of sixth formers and their role as schoolmasters, doctors, lawyers, and other professionals in British society. The author traces the establishment and growth of the sixth form or stage of education. The author points out the usual academic path taken by the sixth form, by passing tests conducted at O-level, and then proceeding onto the university level. Since other sixth formers are shown as not desiring to go onto the university level, the author asks whether the notion of a sixth form is still worth continuing in a changing modern British society. The Crowther Report is then cited as a way to understand this dilemma. The necessity for a university education and entry to other institutions of higher education is also analyzed as a sort of academic extensions of the sixth form. The degree of government assistance rendered to different students is noted, with focus on the state of financial dependence or independence for the sixth form student. The text can be of interest for a great majority of parents, school administrators, and government education officials.
