Annual Reports in Organic Synthesis—1977 presents an annual review of synthetically useful information that would prove beneficial to nearly all organic chemists, both specialist and nonspecialist in synthesis. It should help relieve some of the information storage burden of the specialist and should aid the nonspecialist who is seeking help with a specific problem to become rapidly aware of recent synthetic advances. In producing this volume the editors abstracted 47 primary chemistry journals, selecting useful synthetic advances. All reactions and methods which are new, synthetically useful, and reasonably general are included. Each entry is comprised primarily of structures accompanied by very few comments. The purpose of this is to aid the reader in rapidly scanning the book. Chapters I-III are organized by reaction type and constitute the major part of the book. Chapter IV deals with methods of synthesizing heterocyclic systems. Chapter V covers the use of new protecting groups. Chapter VI is divided into three main parts and covers those synthetically useful transformations that do not fit easily into the first three chapters. The first part deals only with functional group synthesis. The second part covers ring expansion and contraction, and the third part involves useful multistep sequences.

  • Origin and Chemistry of Petroleum

Proceedings of the Third Annual Karcher Symposium, Oklahoma, May 4, 1979
    • 1 Edición
    • Gordon Atkinson + 1 más
    • Inglés
Origin and Chemistry of Petroleum explains that petroleum is produced from exceptionally disseminated organic matter of biological origin encased in extremely buried sediments. Production of petroleum starts when such sediments are exposed to higher temperatures resulting from increased depths of entombment in the sedimentary column. The book discusses that once the petroleum is created from source rocks, the material transfers into porous reservoir rocks. Such rocks, when discovered, will give enough supply of petroleum for commercial production. An evaluation of the molecular analysis of the thermal history of sediments is also discussed in the book. Concepts such as the biological marker compounds, stereochemical conversion, and lower Toarcian sediments are covered in detail. Analysis of organic matters, such as acyclic isoprenoids, steranes, hopanes, and porphyrins, is highlighted. The molecular distributions and stereochemical ratios are also covered in the book. The text can serve as a valuable tool for geologists, chemists, miners, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.
  • Preparative Acetylenic Chemistry

    • 2 Edición
    • Volumen 34
    • L. Brandsma
    • Inglés
The first edition of Preparative Acetylenic Chemistry was published in 1971 as one of a series of laboratory manuals containing experimental procedures. The book was used extensively by students during practical courses and laboratory research work and enabled procedures to be carried out by persons with relatively limited bench experience. Discussions about their results have in many cases led to modified procedures or descriptions which have now been incorporated in this considerably revised and up-dated edition. The new book contains a collection of some 250 experimental procedures on a scale of at least 0.1 molar for the preparation of a wide variety of compounds with a triple bond. A number of procedures in the old edition have been omitted and replaced by others; the subdivision and titling of the chapters and experiments have been changed; and the indexes have been replaced by a type-compound-method index. Some new and attractive methods have been included, e.g. eliminations under phase-transfer conditions and couplings under the influence of zero-valent palladium compounds. In a number of cases, additional experiments have been described in order to give a more complete picture of the scope of the concerned methods. This collection is based on almost 30 years active bench experience by the author and all the procedures have been checked at least once in the author's laboratory. It will undoubtedly provide as much useful and practical assistance as did its predecessor.

  • Ab Initio Valence Calculations in Chemistry

    • 1 Edición
    • D. B. Cook
    • Inglés
Ab Initio Valence Calculations in Chemistry describes the theory and practice of ab initio valence calculations in chemistry and applies the ideas to a specific example, linear BeH2. Topics covered include the Schrödinger equation and the orbital approximation to atomic orbitals; molecular orbital and valence bond methods; practical molecular wave functions; and molecular integrals. Open shell systems, molecular symmetry, and localized descriptions of electronic structure are also discussed. This book is comprised of 13 chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the use of the Schrödinger equation to solve the electronic structure of molecular systems. This discussion is followed by two chapters that describe the chemical and mathematical nature of orbital theories in quantum chemistry. Two general ways of using chemical and physical information in looking for approximate solutions of the Schrödinger equation are highlighted: model approximations and numerical approximations. Attention then turns to atomic orbitals as the basis of a description of molecular electronic structure; practical molecular wave functions; and a general strategy for performing molecular valence calculations. The final chapter examines the nature of the valence electronic structure by using invariance with respect to transformations among the occupied molecular orbitals and among the atomic orbitals. This text will be of interest to students and practitioners of chemistry, biochemistry, and quantum mechanics.

  • Through France with Berzelius

    Live Scholars and Dead Volcanoes
    • 1 Edición
    • C. G. Bernhard
    • Inglés
There are 165 years between Jöns Jacob Berzelius' and Carl Gustaf Bernhard's excursions through the Massif Central in France. In spite of their circumstantial differences, the similarities between the two men of letters is striking. While Berzelius is renowned as one of the founders of modern chemistry and mineralogy, the bulk of Bernhard's achievement has been in the field of neurophysiology--yet both men emerge as having remarkably similar approaches to science and nature. It was as Berzelius' successor to the post of Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences that first gave Bernhard cause to study his literary remains. This was to provide the inspiration for Bernhard, with Berzelius as his guide, to visit the volcanic landscape, in which the remains of Roman columns, mediaeval castles and cathedrals recalled civilizations which have come and gone through the centuries following the geological eruptions. The book is extensively illustrated with sketches of the countryside, portraits of those known by Berzelius as well as colour photographs of the landscape taken by Bernhard, while the narrative alternates between excerpts of Berzelius' letters and writings and Bernhard's own modern travelogue. The result is a fascinating textual and pictorial record of one of the most beautiful regions of France, and of two highly influential Swedish scientists, spanning the last two centuries.

This book provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of the structures and properties of polysaccharides, methods for their characterization, de novo synthesis, and modification, as well as advances in structure/function correlations. Many of these topics are summarized for the first time.A brief survey of polysaccharide structures is given highlighting the most significant advances in analytical and spectroscopic technology (NMR, MS, etc.). A chapter is devoted to glycan properties, including conformational aspects, rheological and compatibility characteristics, etc. There is a comprehensive overview of the de novo synthesis of carbohydrate polymers, the transformation of glycans into novel types of polymers, and the preparation of linear and branched polysaccharide analogues and conjugates with synthetic polymers via chemical and enzymatic approaches. The book also details the factors controlling the uniformity of substitutions in homogeneous and heterogeneous derivatization processes and the elucidation of the substitution patterns of partially modified polysaccharides, through combined spectroscopic and statistical methods. One of the important developments in the glycan field is based on the increasing demand for greater control of the functional properties of these biopolymers. The book provides a very extensive account of various types of modifications, including selective and non-selective chemical techniques, biological methods that facilitate alterations or specific functional groups and properties through the application of synthetic or degradative enzymes, and mutational or recombinant DNA techniques. The coverage extends to the control of glycan integrity and molecular weight through chemical enzymatic, physical or other methods. • Branimir Ivan Sikic + 2 más
    • Inglés
Bleomycin Chemotherapy focuses on the clinical uses of bleomycin. Bleomycin, a group of glycopeptides isolated from Streptomyces verticillus, has a unique structure and mechanism of action among anticancer drugs. The drug’s remarkable lack of bone marrow toxicity prompted its addition to myelosuppressive regimens and enabled treatment of patients with compromised hematopoietic function. Bleomycin is an integral component of one of the great triumphs of medical oncology—the curative treatment of metastatic testicular carcinomas. Similar curative potential has been demonstrated for bleomycin in combination with cisplatin and vinblastine in germ-cell cancers of the ovary. Bleomycin is included in several important treatment regimens for Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The drug also has clinical activity against squamous carcinomas of various sites. These uses and other aspects, including the development of new bleomycin analogs, are discussed in the following chapters, which were first presented at a symposium jointly sponsored by the Northern California Cancer Program and Bristol Laboratories in San Francisco, California, 14-15 September 1984.
