  • Immunopharmacology of the Gastrointestinal System

    • 1 Edición
    • John L. Wallace
    • Inglés
Diseases of the digestive system have a higher morbidity rate than any other group of disorder. There is a growing body of evidence that the immune system participates in the pathogenesis of a wide range of these diseases, including peptic ulcer disease and the gastropathy induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). For these reasons, efforts to develop novel therapies for digestive diseases are increasingly focused on the immune system. This volume reviews the immunopharmacology of the gastrointestinal tract at four distinct levels: Immunomodulation at a cellular level Cellular targers for immunomodulating drugs Specific classes of inflammatory mediators Utility and mechanisms of action of glucocorticoids in the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

  • A History of Immunology

    • 1 Edición
    • Arthur M. Silverstein
    • Inglés
This is a professional-level intellectual history of the development of immunology from about 1720 to about 1970. Beginning with the work and insights of the early immunologists in the 18th century, Silverstein traces the development of the major ideas which have formed immunology down to the maturation of the discipline in the decade following the Second World War. Emphasis is placed on the philosophic and sociologic climate of the scientific milieu in which immunology has developed, providing a background to the broad culture of the discipline.

  • Synthetic Polypeptides as Antigens

    • 1 Edición
    • Volumen 19
    • J.P. Briand + 3 más
    • Inglés
Synthetic Polypeptides as Antigens is the first volume to give a comprehensive treatment under one cover of the various techniques used for synthesizing peptides by the solid phase approach, for coupling them to carrier molecules and analyzing their immunochemical activity by a variety of immunoassays. This book also describes methods for analyzing the antigenic structure of proteins and predicting the location of their antigenic sites. Recent advances in the detection of gene products with antipeptide antibodies, and the still controversial use of synthetic peptides as vaccines are also described. The book provides: - detailed descriptions of procedures - extensive bibliography - detailed analysis of the structural basis of antigenicity in proteins Synthetic Polypeptides as Antigens is intended for researchers and graduate students in molecular biology, protein structure, immunology, virology, and microbiology. Those using synthetic peptides as immunological probes will find this a most useful book, as will those wishing to overcome the difficulties of achieving antigenic mimicry by synthesis.

  • Immunodeficiency Disorders and Retroviruses

Advances in Veterinary Science and Comparative Medicine, Vol. 32
    • 1 Edición
    • Kalman Perk
    • Inglés
Advances in Veterinary Science and Comparative Medicine, Volume 32: Immunodeficiency Disorders and Retroviruses provides an understanding of retrovirus morphogenesis, pathogenesis, and the processes of infection and transformation. This book discusses several issues in retrovirology and their importance in basic viral oncology, comparative medicine, veterinary medicine, and immunodeficiency syndromes. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the replication cycle of retroviruses. This text then summarizes the factors responsible for the progression of the neoplastic condition through each stage in the ontogeny of lymphoid leukosis. Other chapters consider bovine leukemia virus, which is the etiological agent of a chronic lymphatic leukemia/lymphoma in sheep, cos, and goats. This book discusses as well the immunologic, virologic, and epidemiologic aspects of immunosuppressive disease caused by type D retroviruses. The final chapter deals with the involvement of DNA and RNA oncogenic viruses in animal and human neoplasias. This book is a valuable resource for scientists, oncologists, and clinicians.

  • Advances in Immunology

    • 1 Edición
    • Volumen 34
    • Inglés
The selection of subjects presented in this volume reflects the broad scope of immunologic interest. Most of the progress in the field depends upon elucidation of the genetic basis underlying the immune system’s structure and function, and three important genetic areas are represented. They include presentation of a new group of T cell alloantigens with many similarities to the immunoglobulin isotype markers for B cells, discussion of the recently recognized heterogeneity of Class I MHC antigens, and a review of the structure and function of human Ir genes. Additional areas of expanding interest are indicated by three reviews that derive in part from neighboring fields of science but deal with matters of considerable immunologic importance. These are a discussion of interferon, particularly as it relates to and influences immunologic events, a review of the acute phase response to injury which has many paraIlels to and interfaces with the immune response, and, finally, a description of the lectin receptor markers of immunocytes and the imaginative lectin technology that has contributed significantly to the identification of the various functionally heterogeneous lymphocyte populations.
