Thus, Chinese diagnosis is based on a subtle appraisal of a patient's disharmony, which may not be a "disease" at all, and as such requires careful interpretation of a range of nuances. • Shiatsu for Midwives

    • 1 Edición
    • Suzanne Yates + 1 más
    • Inglés
This book provides an in-depth guide to how shiatsu can form part of modern maternity care. Based on traditional Chinese and Japanese approaches to health, shiatsu can be used to alleviate many of the chronic symptoms of pregnancy such as backache, insomnia and morning sickness. It can also help during labour and birth, as well as relieve postnatal problems such as heavy postpartum bleeding or difficulties with lactation. A shiatsu treatment simply encourages the body to balance its own natural energy by gentle stimulation of its energy pathways, the meridians - the same pathways used in acupuncture. The age-old midwifery skills of touching and stroking are an intrinsic part of nurturing and cherishing - the essence of 'being with woman'. Shiatsu takes this simple healing technique one stage further. You will find tips on how to use core midwifery skills of touch, gentle pressure and massage in a more systematic and focused way. The authors also discuss the actions necessary to establish its use in a maternity unit, including training and professional issues.Suzanne Yates is the leading shiatsu teacher world-wide to have made maternity work her main focus. She has been working with midwives and pregnant women for the last 13 years and developed a course of applied shiatsu for midwives that fulfils NMC requirements for training. Tricia Anderson, midwife lecturer and supervisor and past editor of Practising Midwife, has collaborated with her to ensure the content is appropriate to midwives' Code of Practice. This is a key text for anyone wishing to explore this new area.

  • Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine

Science, Research Methods and Clinical Implications
    • 1 Edición
    • Wayne B. Jonas + 1 más
    • Inglés
This book provides a clear and authoritative summary of the results and clinical implications of research in spiritual healing, energy medicine and the effects of intentionality. Recent publications in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the Western Journal of Medicine, JAMA and the Annals of Internal Medicine have focused on prayer, distant healing and spiritual healing. Therapeutic touch is taught in many nursing schools and laying-on-of-hands and mental healing are of great interest to the public. But what is the science behind these practices? Is there any research? Is it any good? What are the implications of this research for medicine and science? How should investigation of spiritual healing proceed, if at all? These are the questions this book explores. This book derives from a project sponsored by the Lawrence S. Rockefeller for the purpose of rigorously evaluating the science of spiritual healing. To produce the book, some of the best researchers in these areas were asked to use a standard set of quality criteria for the evaluation of science and clinical research. A conference of scientists, physicians, ministers and others then reviewed and discussed this literature and addressed methods for their further evaluation. The conference was organised by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Duke University, Wake Forest University and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The evidence level of these areas was rated using standards established by government groups and published in JAMA for classification of the amount and quality of evidence in medicine. Each area was summarised, and clinical implications identified. Recommendations for future research and investigating the impact of healing practices in the clinical setting were also made.

This book covers the time from the initial acceptance of a patient as a candidate for podiatric surgery to discharge after surgery. It is written in a way that whilst each section of the book follows the one before, each stand alone. Throughout the book highlighted 'tips' are given that cover some of the pitfalls often encountered by podiatrists during and after surgery. It is written from the assumption that the reader is a surgical student or an assistant with little practice or no practical experience in the operating room or assisting at surgery. The reader is taken step by step, explaining each problem or anticipated difficulty in the order that they may encounter it.
