  • Healthgrain Methods

Analysis of Bioactive Components in Small Grain Cereals
    • 1 Edición
    • Peter Shrewry
    • Inglés
The explosion of interest around the health benefits of whole grains has led to a new focus on the bioactive components of cereals, including their location and physiological effects. Grains are an important source of minerals (notably selenium, iron and zinc) and vitamins, such as folate. These nutrients are often degraded or removed by the milling or polishing of the grain to provide refined products. Measurements of these components require methodologies for analysis that must be accurate and reproducible and that provide adequate samples to allow wide screening. The work of the 47 prominent international food scientists presented in this comprehensive volume is the direct result of the European Union’s Framework 6 HEALTHGRAIN program which focuses on the role of wholegrain cereals in reducing the risk of metabolic syndrome-related diseases. The development of routine analytical methods for this group of essential phytochemical and dietary fiber components will help food companies improve the health benefits of their products as well as their abilities to measure the bioactive ingredients in cereal-based foods.

    • Inglés
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common disabling neurological disease of young adults. More than 2.3 million people are affected by MS worldwide. Symptoms can vary widely, depending on the localization and amount of the damage induced by combined inflammatory, demyelinating, and neurodegenerative processes. Although a cure for MS does not currently exist, therapies can help treat MS attacks, attenuate disease activity, reduce progress of the disease, and manage symptoms. Translational Neuroimmunology in Multiple Sclerosis provides an overview of recent findings and knowledge of the neuroimmunology of multiple sclerosis, from experimental models and the human disease to the translation of this research to immunotherapeutic strategies. Chapters describe genetic and environmental factors underlying the disease pathogenesis of MS as a basis for development of immunotherapies, immunological markers of disease activity, pharmacogenetics, and responses to therapy. Immunomodulatory therapies currently in practice and future therapeutic strategies on the horizon—such as neuroprotective strategies, stem cells, and repair promotion—are discussed. Contributed by renowned leaders in the field, this cross-disciplinary volume is a great resource for basic scientists and clinical practitioners in neuroscience, neurology, immunology, pharmacology, and in-drug development.

  • Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat

    • 1 Edición
    • George A Parker + 1 más
    • Inglés
Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42.
  • Congenital Heart Disease and Neurodevelopment

    Understanding and Improving Outcomes
    • 1 Edición
    • Christopher McCusker + 1 más
    • Inglés
Congenital Heart Disease and Neurodevelopment: Understanding and Improving Outcomes brings together the work of leading researchers from the U.K., Europe, and the U.S. to provide a comprehensive examination of the causes, risks, and neurodevelopmental and psychological outcomes in children with congenital heart disease. The book includes longitudinal studies which have tracked outcomes from birth through late childhood and explores the emergent phenotype and etiologies, risk, and protective factors that strengthen proposed models. Medical and surgical advances have meant that greater numbers of children with even the most severe congenital heart disease (CHD) now survive well into adulthood. Studies over the past 20 years have suggested certain neurodevelopmental and psychological features are common, with clinical interventions being internationally articulated. The U.K. Belfast Center has developed and evaluated unique early intervention programs to circumvent the common problems discerned and promote optimal adjustment and outcomes. The first edition of Congenital Heart Disease and Neurodevelopment: Understanding and Improving Outcomes describes these programs in detail and outlines promising results obtained by researchers worldwide. Such interventions, together with the U.S. consensus statement (Circulation, 2012) on neurodevelopmental screening, hold great promise for clinical interventions.

  • The Nature of Disease

    Section I
    • 1 Edición
    • J. E. R. McDonagh
    • Inglés
The Nature of Disease, Part III deals with mal-coordination and disease, disease and the nervous systems, and chronic intestinal intoxication. This book discusses the signs and symptoms of disease which is the result of the body's failure to resist infection. The author sees that dehydration is the prevailing abnormal chemico-physical change in the acute stage of disease attack; hydration in the chronic stage. He notes that these two phenomena occur when protein particles in the plasma in disease undergo either a dehydration or hydration process. The author also reviews F.M. Alexander's work on the conscious control of the individual, through psycho-physical mechanism, as a whole body, instead of being reflected in certain anatomical part such as the kidneys, liver, or skin. The author examines the interrelationships between mal-coordination and the nervous system. Such mal-coordination results in chronic intestinal intoxication on nervous manifestations; the author then demonstrates how nerve tissues are damaged by abnormal protein particles in the plasma. The author cites several cases of mal-coordination concerning the nervous system, the vegetative nervous system and the alimentary tract, as well as the role played by a chronic intestinal intoxication in the invasion of the nervous system by micro-organisms. This book can prove informative for cellular biologists, researchers in micro-chemistry or neuro-biology, and doctors in general practice.

An understanding of the processes of plant reproduction is increasingly important in the exploitation of plant resources. Microspore formation is a major event in the life cycles of land plants, allowing the transition from diploid sporophyte generation to the haploid gametophyte generation, and varies greatly between taxa in the diversity of processes involved. Despite the wealth of information available, there are very few sources which bring together the results of research work on the reproduction in all the major plant groups.**Microspores fills this gap by reviewing microsporogenesis from a systematic and evolutionary perspective in groups ranging from algae to angiosperms. Special chapters focus on structure, function, cell and molecular processes, and potential biotechnological applications of plant spores and pollen. The result is an up-to-date guide to the applications of modern techniques in the classic area of botany.**This work bridges several disciplines to provide a coherent and authoritative account which will be essential reading for research scientists and lecturers in botany, evolution, ultrastructure, reproductive and developmental biology, and palynology.
