  • Our Genes, Our Choices

How Genotype and Gene Interactions Affect Behavior
    • 2 Edición
    • David Goldman
    • Inglés
Our Genes, Our Choices: How Genotype and Gene Interactions Affect Behavior, Second Edition explains how the complexity of human behavior, including concepts of free will, derives from a relatively small number of genes which direct neurodevelopmental sequences. Are people free to make choices or do genes determine behavior? Paradoxically, the answer to both questions is "yes," because of neurogenetic individuality, a new theory with profound implications. Here, author David Goldman uses judicial, political, medical, and ethical examples to illustrate that this lifelong process is guided by individual genotype, molecular and physiologic principles, as well as by randomness and environmental exposures.Written in an authoritative yet accessible style, the book includes practical descriptions of the function of DNA, discusses the scientific and historical bases of genethics, and introduces the topics of epigenetics and the predictive power of behavioral genetics.

Metalloenzymes: From Bench to Bedside offers a thorough overview of metalloenzymes, spanning biochemical and structural features, pharmacology, and biotechnological applications. After a brief overview, international experts in the field discuss a wide range of magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese, nickel, iron, copper, cadmium, molybdenum, and tungsten enzymes, along with catalytic roles within their active sites. With a uniform approach throughout, each chapter includes the structure and function of the enzyme, physiologic and pathologic roles, inhibitors and activators of the enzyme (and their design), and clinical agents or compounds applied in medicine and drug discovery. This book enables scientists across academia and industry to adopt ongoing metalloenzyme research, and continuous discovery of novel metalloenzymes, in new life science studies and clinical applications.

Bone Cell Biomechanics, Mechanobiology and Bone Diseases provides a comprehensive overview of recent knowledge and advances of bone cell biomechanics and related bone diseases, highlighting the cellular basis for bone responding to mechanical stimuli. The book not only provides a general overview of bone cell biology, but also the most recent advances of bone cell biomechanics, mechanobiology, the relationship between bone cell biomechanics and bone diseases, as well as the underlying mechanism. This will be useful in understanding the role of mechanobiology in bone health and bone diseases, as well for investigating novel strategies for diagnosis and therapy of bone diseases. Cells covered in the book include osteocyte, BM-MSC, osteoblast, osteoclast and chondrocyte. Cone diseases covered are osteoporosis, scoliosis and osteoarthritis. This comprehensive reference is written for researchers, scientists, clinicians and students.

Brain and Crime, Volume 197 reviews the relation between brain function and aggressive and rule-breaking (criminal) behavior. The book's focus is on the violation of social rules and not on violation of regulations that are different in different counties. It discusses the development of this behavior from childhood into adulthood, along with the mechanisms associated with the risk for aggression and rule-breaking behavior. In addition, it explores from a behavioral level concepts like psychopathology, syndrome and concepts from law, such as crime, defendant and offender. Finally, sections explore brain function, including emotion, cognitive processes, and decision-making. From the perspective of brain structure, the book covers brain networks and brain disorders. In genetics, the book includes the influence of genes and the mechanisms of epigenetics. All chapters are intended to provide information for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, and in assessment and prevention.

Foundations of the Mind, Brain, and Behavioral Relationships: Understanding Physiological Psychology is an engaging introduction into neuroscience, and the portions of the nervous system, perception, and the clinical considerations in physiological psychology. "Clinical Applications" appear throughout the chapters and provide real-world examples of brain–behavior relationships, and how the nervous system interacts with other body systems to create a specific behavior. Creating an interactive experience for learners, this volume connects the study of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology with clinically relevant topics, ranging from stress and eating disorders to substance abuse, major affective disorders, and schizophrenia. Integrating the foundations of neuroscience with disorders encountered in clinical practice serves as a foundation to better understand the clinical bases of these conditions. Coauthored by clinical neuropsychologists, this book is for those interested in learning about the underpinnings of the mind, brain, and human behaviors in normal and divergent functioning.
  • Modeling of Post-Myocardial Infarction

    ODE/PDE Analysis with R

    • Inglés
Modeling of Post-Myocardial Infarction: ODE/PDE Analysis with R presents mathematical models for the dynamics of a post-myocardial (post-MI), aka, a heart attack. The mathematical models discussed consist of six ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with dependent variables Mun; M1; M2; IL10; Tα; IL1. The system variables are explained as follows: dependent variable Mun = cell density of unactivated macrophage; dependent variable M1 = cell density of M1 macrophage; dependent variable M2 = cell density of M2 macrophage; dependent variable IL10 = concentration of IL10, (interleuken-10); dependent variable Tα = concentration of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-α); dependent variable IL1 = concentration of IL1 (interleuken-1). The system of six ODEs does not include a spatial aspect of an MI in the cardiac tissue. Therefore, the ODE model is extended to include a spatial effect by the addition of diffusion terms. The resulting system of six diffusion PDEs, with x (space) and t (time) as independent variables, is integrated (solved) by the numerical method of lines (MOL), a general numerical algorithm for PDEs.
