  • Nuclear Physics (1929-1952)

    • 1 Edición
    • Volumen 9
    • R. Peierls
    • Inglés
``Nuclear Physics'' deals with Bohr's work on nuclear physics which began in the pre-1932 days with his thinking deeply, but inconclusively about the seeming contradictions then presented by the evidence about the nucleus. In 1936, Bohr recognised and described the insights provided by neutron scattering experiments; the excitement of this new understanding and its extension and consolidation occupied much of the subsequent years. In 1939, he was again first in understanding the essential features of the newly discovered phenomenon of fission, applying successfully the point of view of nuclear reactions which he had developed over the past three years. Later, in 1949-50, he was impressed by the success of the nuclear shell model, which on the face of it seemed hard to reconcile with the picture of the closely interacting nucleons which he had pioneered in 1936. Bohr put much effort into clarifying this paradox.
  • Particle Deposition and Aggregation

    Measurement, Modelling and Simulation
    • 1 Edición
    • M. Elimelech + 2 más
    • R. A. F. Williams
    • Inglés
Particle Deposition and Aggregation: Measurement, Modelling and Simulation describes how particle deposition and aggregation can be measured, modeled, and simulated in a systematic manner. It brings together the necessary disciplines of colloid and surface chemistry, hydrodynamics, experimental methods, and computational methods to present a unified approach to this problem. The book is divided into four parts. Part I presents the theoretical principles governing deposition and aggregation phenomena, including a discussion of the forces that exist between particles and the hydrodynamic factors that control the movement of the particles and suspending fluid. Part II introduces methods for modeling the processes, first at a simple level (e.g. single particle-surface, single particle-single particle interactions in model flow conditions) and then describes the simulation protocols and computation tools which may be employed to describe more complex (multiple-particle interaction) systems. Part III summarizes the experimental methods of quantifying aggregating and depositing systems and concludes with a comparison of experimental results with those predicted using simple theoretical predictions. Part IV is largely based on illustrative examples to demonstrate the application of simulation and modeling methods to particle filtration, aggregation, and transport processes. This book should be useful to graduates working in process and environmental engineering research or industrial development at a postgraduate level, and to scientists who wish to extend their knowledge into more realistic process conditions in which the fluid hydrodynamics and other complicating factors must be accommodated.

  • Free Vibrations of Circular Cylindrical Shells

    • 1 Edición
    • Anthony E. Armenàkas + 2 más
    • Inglés
Free Vibrations of Circular Cylindrical Shells deals with thin-walled structures that undergo dynamic loads application, thereby resulting in some vibrations. Part I discusses the treatment of problems associated with the propagation of plane harmonic waves in a hollow circular cylinder. In such search for solutions, the text employs the framework of the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The text explains the use of tables of natural frequencies and graphs of representative mode shapes of harmonic elastic waves bounding in an infinitely long isotropic hollow cylinder. The tables are found to be useful as they can be used to check validity and provide estimates of the range of applicability of various shell theories. The purpose of the frequency equation and that of the numerical computations likewise are considered. The book includes a computer program written in the FORTRAN language to show how it is used in the computations, except in cases when H (the thickness of shell) and L (axial half of wavelength) result in extremely small values. Part II consists of related tables and graphs. Physicists, engineers, students, and researchers in advanced sciences will find this book of interest.
  • Wave Propagation and Group Velocity

    • 1 Edición
    • Léon Brillouin
    • H. S. W. Massey
    • Inglés
Wave Propagation and Group Velocity contains papers on group velocity which were published during the First World War and are missing in many libraries. It introduces three different definitions of velocities: the group velocity of Lord Rayleigh, the signal velocity of Sommerfeld, and the velocity of energy transfer, which yields the rate of energy flow through a continuous wave and is strongly related to the characteristic impedance. These three velocities are identical for nonabsorbing media, but they differ considerably in an absorption band. Some examples are discussed in the last chapter dealing with guided waves, and many other cases of application of these definitions are quoted. These problems have come again into the foreground, in connection with the propagation of radio signals and radar. Reflection in the Heaviside layers requires a real knowledge of all these different definitions. Group velocity also plays a very important role in wave mechanics and corresponds to the speed of a particle. The present book should be very useful to physicists and radio engineers and should give them a good basis for new discussions and applications.

    • 1 Edición
    • L. Pincherle
    • W. Ashhurst + 1 más
    • Inglés
Worked Problems in Heat, Thermodynamics and Kinetic Theory for Physics Students is a complementary to textbooks in physics. This book is a collection of exercise problems that have been part of tutorial classes in heat and thermodynamics at the University of London. This collection of exercise problems, with answers that are fully worked out, deals with various topics. This book poses problems covering the definition of temperature such as calculating the assigned value of the temperature of boiling water under specific conditions. This text also gives example of problems dealing with the first law of thermodynamics and with the definition of thermal capacities. Some practical questions such as problems dealing with thermal engines are presented. This book then discusses problems using the energy equation, as well as asking the student to derive a general equation of state of a material satisfying a specific condition. This text challenges the student to use a T-S diagram to calculate the efficiency of a reversible cycle under certain conditions. Several other problems concern the Joule and Joule-Kelvin effects, low temperature physics, and heat conduction. This review material can be helpful for students of physics, thermodynamics, and related subjects. It can also be used by teachers of physics.
  • Structure of Matter

With Contributions in Memoriam Including a Complete Bibliography of His Works
    • 1 Edición
    • C. Guy Suits
    • Inglés
The Collected Works of Irving Langmuir: Volume 6, Structure of Matter deals with the research work of Irving Langmuir in the field of thermionics, gaseous discharge, and on the structure of atoms with emphasis on valence. Some of the paper he writes on the subject of atomic structure are: "The Structure of Atoms and the Octet Theory of Valence," "The Arrangement of Electrons in Atoms and Molecules," and "The Octet Theory of Valence and its Applications with Special Reference to Organic Nitrogen Compounds." He challenges the complexities of valence theory and atomic structure, leading to a complete change of the theoretical structure of the subject of chemistry. Langmuir also works on molecules and crystalline structures, and applies the structures of crystals to check and confirm his own theories on molecular structure. His assumption that "the force between molecules in contact can be considered as caused by a surface energy proportional to the area over which the molecules are in contact" provides a solid foundation for explaining the properties of many chemical substances. Chemists, students, academicians, scientists, and general readers interested in the lives of great men in science will find this book very informative.
  • Dealing with Data

The Commonwealth and International Library: Physics Division
    • 1 Edición
    • Arthur J. Lyon
    • W. Ashhurst
    • Inglés
Dealing with Data is an introductory course to problems and techniques dealing with data analysis, with emphasis on the physical and engineering sciences. The book starts with the basics of data analysis through non-statistical and non-mathematical assessments of error and uncertainty conditions. Experimental and maximum errors and the use of simple graphical methods are briefly described. Applying quick methods on data analysis such as frequency distributions, determination of standard errors, and applications of significance tests are explained. Special attention is given to the statistical quick methods where the range is preferred to traditional methods of calculation. The author notes that the quick methods have more practical applications in physics and engineering. The use of the quick methods of calculation is more precise in error estimation, confidence limits, and tests for outliers that the error is very negligible when applied to actual conditions. Dealing with errors of computation arising from rounding of values, and those arising from the use of slide rules and of the logarithm tables, is explained. The use of numerical methods (integration, differentiation, and interpolation) and graphical methods (like curve fitting) is briefly explained, with the author's emphasis on choosing the simpler methods. Sixth formers, engineering undergraduates, statisticians, and students of mathematics will find the information in this book useful.

  • The Pseudo-Spin Method in Magnetism and Ferroelectricity

International Series of Monographs in Natural Philosophy
    • 1 Edición
    • Ljubisav Novaković
    • D. Ter Harr
    • Inglés
The Pseudo-Spin Method in Magnetism and Ferroelectricity deals with the pseudo-spin method in magnetism and ferroelectricity, with emphasis on three important ordered systems: ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, and hydrogen-bonded ferroelectrics. Each system is analyzed in three important temperature regions: low temperatures, the critical region, and high temperatures. The presented mathematical method is predominantly analytical in the sense that all crucial physical quantities are expressed in terms of temperature or the reciprocal lattice vectors. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to Basic concepts in lattice dynamics, touching on topics such as symmetry groups, light scattering, and the spectrum of ionic crystals. The discussion then turns to phase transitions and covers magnetism, ferroelectricity, and the Ising model with a transverse field. Magnetic elementary excitations are then considered, paying particular attention to the second quantization method; the exchange interaction; the Heisenberg ferromagnet in a boson representation; and high-temperature static susceptibility. The final chapter is devoted to the Green functions and their perturbation expansion; ferromagnetism at low temperatures; antiferromagnetism and ferroelectric modes; and high-temperature dielectric susceptibilities. This book will be of interest to physicists as well as students and researchers in physics.
  • Advances in Astronomy and Astrophysics

    • Volumen 5
    • Zdeněk Kopal
    • Inglés
Advances in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 5 is a collection of papers that deals with the Zodiacal light, three dimensional periodic oscillations, the secular variation of mass, and the evolution of binary systems. Some papers discuss the periodicity of the sunspot groups, as well as compact and dispersed cosmic matter. One paper notes that the brightness of the zodiacal light continues to increase right up to the limb of the Sun, where it merges with parts of the solar corona. Another paper discusses analytically and numerically the three families of three-dimensional motions where the members of each family pass very close to one of three equilibrium points. One paper describes the loss of mass in the Sun as being (1) caused by electromagnetic or corpuscular radiation that occurs at a slow rate, or (2) by an explosion of a nova or supernova. One paper examines the periodicity of solar activities, the physical conditions of sunspots, chromospheric flares, prominence, and magnetic fields. The paper notes that different periodicity laws govern the formation frequency and importance of spot groups. The behavior of spot groups also depends on the periodicity process of solar activity. The collection can prove valuable for astro-physicists, astronomers, geochemists, and mathematicians whose works involve cosmology and astronomy.

Excited States, Volume 4 is a collection of papers that deals with the excited states of molecular activity. One paper investigates the resonance Raman spectroscopy as the key to vibrational-electron... coupling. This paper reviews the basic theory of Raman scattering; it also explains the derivation of the Raman spectra, excitation profiles, and depolarization ratios for simple resonance systems. Another paper reviews the magnetic properties of triplet states, including the zero-field resonance techniques, the high-field experiments, and the spin Hamiltonian. This paper focuses on the magnetic properties of triplet states through magnetic resonance experiments applied in the presence or absence of such fields. Another paper analyzes the effects of a magnetic field on molecular luminescence. This paper also describes the investigations made to the quenching of molecular luminescence in the presence of a magnetic field from molecules such as glyoxal, as well as some applications of magnetic quenching. One paper reviews the time-dependent behavior of excited molecules. This paper explains the essential features of "intermediate" cases encountered in the photo-physical time-dependent studies of excitable molecules by comparing theoretical aspects and experimental data. Nuclear scientists, physicists, and researchers whose works involve molecular chemistry and solid state physics will find this collection valuable.

In the last decade the author has been engaged in developing a micromechanical composite model based on the study of interacting periodic cells. In this two-phase model, the inclusion is assumed to occupy a single cell whereas the matrix material occupies several surrounding cells. A prominent feature of the micromechanical method of cells is the transition from a medium, with a periodic microstructure to an equivalent homogeneous continuum which effectively represents the composite material. Of great importance is the significant advantage of the cells model in its capability to analyze elastic as well as nonelastic constituents (e.g. viscoelastic, elastoplastic and nonlinear elastic), thus forming a unified approach in the prediction of the overall behaviour of composite material. This book deals almost exclusively with this unified theory and its various applications.
