This reference provides a comprehensive alternative approach grounded in complexity science, nonlinear dynamics, and chaotic systems theory. The book's contents span foundational concepts, including motor unit orchestration, networked nonlinear oscillators, information theory, and methodological considerations. Detailed chapters cover the shortcomings of current models, the application of chaotic system mathematics to basal ganglia physiology, and the implications for pathophysiology and treatment. The book also includes extensive simulations, operational hypotheses, and a rigorous critique of existing paradigms that is supported by principles such as Causational and Informational Synonymy.
  • Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior

    • 3 Edición
    • Benjamin Oldroyd
    • Inglés
Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior, Third Edition, Four Volume Set is a unique curated collection of punchy essays on all aspects of animal behavior, written by experts and carefully edited for readability and accessibility. Animal behavior is usually defined as what animals do, i.e. their movements. We can ask how they move, (i.e. the physiological and neurological causes of movement) and why they move. To answer this latter question, behavioralists generally turn to evolutionary explanations. The Encyclopedia gives equal weight to these ‘how’ (proximate) and `why` (ultimate) explanations of animal behavior. The third edition updates and expands the previous version to cover all substantive topics in the field. Animal behavior is one of the largest subdisciplines in biology. Therefore, chapters focus on broad concepts and avoid becoming entrapped in taxon-specific detail. To illustrate this, one could consider the topic ‘cooperative hunting’. One way to cover this topic would be to have individual chapters on hunting in lions, mongoose, African wild dogs, army ants, dolphins etc. But it would serve the reader much better if a comparative approach was taken to see if there are commonalities across taxa. For example, is communication necessary for cooperative hunting? Is there any evidence of planning or is every hunt opportunistic? This comparative approach requires authors to provide a synthesis, pushing beyond specific taxa of expertise, but helps readers making useful connections. This is a fundamental feature of this work. This edition retains chapters on the historical development of the field, which is important to our understanding of where the discipline sits today, but similarly the work is forward leaning, including the authors` perspective of where their discipline is headed. Structured chapters and cross-references help readers following their interests with ease. Like a bird field guide, this encyclopedia is an entrée to deeper knowledge. Readers of the encyclopedia are encouraged to explore beyond individual chapters via links to related ones, key reviews and relevant online material.

By this point, many patients have received at least one wrong diagnosis. Additionally, some patients have undergone several unnecessary investigative tests, received improper or flawed treatment, and continued to suffer. Neuro-ophthalmologic... Pain: Diagnosis and Treatment contains information on a multitude of often-overlooked ailments in a single, comprehensive volume, for use by the neurologist as well as for all practitioners looking to guide their patients toward appropriate care. It will provide potentially life-changing information for those with ocular pain with decreased vision, ocular pain with ophthalmoplegia or ophthalmoparesis, ocular pain with papilledema, ocular pain with autonomic manifestations, and ocular pain that has overlap with ocular disorders. Neuro-ophthalmologic... Pain: Diagnosis and Treatment is a powerful tool in helping physicians establish correct diagnoses, so that they may either provide proper treatment or refer their patients to the correct medical specialists.

Commonly used and associated with gut health and nutrition, the rapidly growing field of 'biotics' a collective term for probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, parapostbiotcs and more, is constantly being challenged for its validity of health applications and its adaptation into the food industry for therapeutic benefits in functional products. Paraprobiotics, Postbiotics and Psychobiotics in Foods: From Concept to Validated Application is a gateway for readers to focus on the broad insights of the biotic arena to establish foundational understanding. Divided into three sections, one for each of the major topics, Paraprobiotics, Postbiotics and Psychobiotics in Foods: From Concept to Validated Application treats each individually but consistently, and gives readers an introduction to emerging concepts and how ‘biotics’ are being used in the development of health promoting and therapeutic functional food products. Each section begins with an introductory chapter that defines mechanisms of action, sources and health benefits, and is followed by the associated potential application of these components in food products. Sections conclude with detailed information on the regulatory, technical and quality control aspects associated with such food products. This book gives readers a better understanding and acceptance of ‘biotics’ used for functional foods.
