    • Inglés
Composite Materials: A Directory of European Research is a directory of individuals, research establishments (academic, independent, and industrial), and research topics related to composite materials. The directory is divided into 10 sections, each of which represents nine European countries (Great Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Norway), and published in English, French, and German. The first section lists the names of people involved in research and development work involving composite materials, as well as the name of the establishment where the person is employed. Each name is assigned a unique four-digit code that provides a cross-reference to the second section. The second section lists the establishments with full postal addresses, each with a numerical code that identifies individual research staff (from the previous section); the number of research personnel associated with the named individual working on composite materials; the type of organization (academic, independent, or industrial); and whether or not the establishment accepts contract research. The remaining sections provide details of research topics and activities covered by the people listed in the first section, including fibers (monofilaments and bundles), types of composites, matrix, physical and mechanical testing, fabrication and processing, non-destructive testing, and applications. This monograph will be useful to those working in, or entering, the field of composites.
  • Building Physics: Lighting

    Seeing in the Artificial Environment
    • 1 Edición
    • W. R. Stevens
    • Inglés
Building Physics: Lighting, Seeing in the Artificial Environment deals with basic principles of lighting as used in architecture, in building maintenance, and in an artificial environment. The book starts with the process of how humans see; the interaction of the eye and mind; and the effects of fatigue, visual disorders, and age. The phenomena of light are then discussed — how light behaves and how it is measured. Light and light waves beyond the visible spectrum are explained scientifically as being part of the electromagnetic spectrum within the 400 to 760 nm ranges. The different light sources are identified as daylight and artificial lights, with many types of lamps under the latter. As regards artificial lighting, a lighting fitting has two functions: redistributes luminescence properly and provides a suitable receptacle for the lamp. The requirements when using artificial or natural light in an exterior or interior setting are enumerated. The book also explains the specifications of the amount of light and how this amount is calculated. Interior lighting, both from artificial and natural sources, is comprehensively discussed, including issues such as discomfort glare, reflected glare, design and aesthetics, lighting requirements in different kinds of buildings, and flammability properties. The text also tackles exterior lighting including decorative floodlights, lighting for tunnels and underpasses, and special problem areas. Architects, engineers, electricians, interior designers, lighting technicians, environmentalists, and readers with interest in home decor will find this book useful.

  • A Course of Mathematics for Engineerings and Scientists

    Volume 4
    • 1 Edición
    • Brian H. Chirgwin + 1 más
    • Inglés
A Course of Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists offers a mathematics course for undergraduate students reading science and engineering at British and Commonwealth Universities and colleges. The aim of this volume is to generalize and develop the ideas and methods of earlier volumes so that the student can appreciate and use the mathematical methods required in the more advanced parts of physics and engineering. This book begins with elementary ideas of vector algebra which are generalized and developed in two ways. The first is an account of vector analysis and the differential and integral operations and theorems concerning vectors. These ideas find their first generalization in tensor analysis and the transformation of coordinates, including orthogonal curvilinear coordinates. The second development is to matrices, where the properties of arrays of elements, linear equations, and quadratic forms are shown to be the generalizations of elementary algebra and, using 'vector space', of familiar geometrical ideas to n dimensions. The solution of differential equations by series provides a general method for the solution of ordinary and some partial differential equations. A discussion of the properties of the solutions in the light of the Sturm-Liouville theory introduces the conceptions of eigenvalues and orthogonal functions, forming a link with matrices. A chapter on the special functions gives some of the better known properties of Bessel, Legendre, Laguerre, and Hermite functions, which commonly occur in the solution of boundary and initial value problems.
  • Particle Size Enlargement

    • J. C. Williams + 1 más
    • Inglés
Handbook of Powder Technology, Volume 1: Particle Size Enlargement is the first of a series which will together form a Handbook of Powder Technology, primarily intended for engineers and scientists working in industry. The scope of the Handbook can be defined as being concerned with that part of chemical engineering which deals with processes involving the handling and treatment of material in solid particulate form. This book deals with methods used to create larger entities from fine particles so that the bulk properties of particulates can be improved. These so-called ""size enlargement"" methods evidently concern a broad spectrum of technical disciplines and industries ranging from the relatively small scale requirements of pharmaceutical manufacturers through the tonnage requirements of the fertilizer and minerals processing industries. A primary objective in preparing this book was to present a generalized account of the many size enlargement techniques scattered throughout these diverse industries, with emphasis on similarities and unifying characteristics whenever possible. The book devotes one chapter to each of the principal methods used to bring particles together into agglomerates: agitation methods— tumbling agglomeration, agitation methods—mixer agglomeration, pressure methods, thermal methods, spray and dispersion methods, and agglomeration from liquids.

  • Rational Descriptions, Decisions and Designs

    Pergamon Unified Engineering Series
    • 1 Edición
    • Myron Tribus
    • Thomas F. Irvine + 1 más
    • Inglés
Rational Descriptions, Decisions and Designs is a reference for understanding the aspects of rational decision theory in terms of the basic formalism of information theory. The text provides ways to achieve correct engineering design decisions. The book starts with an understanding for the need to apply rationality, as opposed to uncertainty, in design decision making. Inductive logic in computers is explained where the design of the machine and the accompanying software are considered. The text then explains the functional equations and the problems of arriving at a rational description through some mathematical preliminaries. Bayes' equation and rational inference as tools for adjusting probabilities when something new is encountered in earlier probability distributions are explained. The book presents as well a case study concerning the error made in following specifications of spark plugs. The author also explains the Bernoulli trials, where a probability that a better hypothesis than that already adopted may exist. The rational measure of uncertainty and the principle of maximum entropy with sample calculations are included in the text. After considering the probabilities, the decision theory is taken up where engineering design follows. Examples regarding transmitter and voltmeter designs are presented. The book ends by explaining probabilities of success and failure as applied to reliability engineering, that it is a state of knowledge rather than the state of a thing. The text can serve as a textbook for students in technology engineering and design, and as a useful reference for mathematicians, statisticians, and fabrication engineers.

    • Inglés
A Critical Review of Equilibrium Data for Proton- and Metal Complexes of 1,10-Phenanthroline, 2,2'-Bipyridyl and Related Compounds is a compilation of acidity constants for the 1,10-phenanthroliniu... and 2,2'-bipyridinium ions and their derivatives, as well as stability constants for metal complexes formed by the conjugate bases of these. These equilibrium data are critically examined. This monograph includes values determined in non-aqueous or mixed solvents, as well as those for a large number of ""mixed"" metal complexes incorporating these bases and a second ligand. The survey also contains known values for the enthalpies and entropies of formation for the proton- and metal-ion complexes. The compilation indicates the conditions under which the equilibrium constants apply and the methods by which they were determined. The acid-base properties of the compounds are represented by the acidity constant of the phenanthrolinium or bipyridinium ion expressed as a pK value. Nearly all the values listed were obtained either potentiometrically or spectrophotometrical... both of which depend fundamentally on measurements of pH or hydrogen-ion concentration. This book will be of value to chemists.

  • Semiconductor Statistics

International Series of Monographs on Semiconductors
    • 1 Edición
    • J. S. Blakemore
    • Heinz K. Henisch
    • Inglés
Semiconductor Statistics presents statistics aimed at complementing existing books on the relationships between carrier densities and transport effects. The book is divided into two parts. Part I provides introductory material on the electron theory of solids, and then discusses carrier statistics for semiconductors in thermal equilibrium. Of course a solid cannot be in true thermodynamic equilibrium if any electrical current is passed; but when currents are reasonably small the distribution function is but little perturbed, and the carrier distribution for such a ""quasi-equilibrium"... condition is inappreciably different from that of thermal equilibrium itself. Thus the results of Part I are not invalidated when the properties of a semiconductor are measured using small current densities. Part II considers non-equilibrium statistics for semiconductors with appreciable excess carrier densities. The various kinds of recombination mechanism are examined, and the consequences discussed for steady state and transient situations. The subject matter of this book was deliberately restricted in scope in order to be of maximum value to scientists with an active interest in the basic properties of semiconducting materials.

    • Inglés
Treatise on Materials Science and Technology, Volume 25: Embrittlement of Engineering Alloys is an 11-chapter text that describes some situations that produce premature failure of several engineering alloys, including steels and nickel- and aluminum-base alloys. Chapters 1 to 3 consider situations where improper alloy composition, processing, and/or heat treatment can lead to a degradation of mechanical properties, even in the absence of an aggressive environment or an elevated temperature. Chapters 4 and 5 examine the effect of elevated temperatures on the mechanical properties of both ferrous and nonferrous alloys. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the effects of corrosive environments on both stressed and unstressed materials. In these environments anodic dissolution is the primary step that leads to failure. Chapters 8 to 10 deal with the effects of aggressive environments that lead to enhanced decohesion or embrittlement of the metal, such as hydrogen, liquid metal, and irradiation-induced embrittlement. Chapter 11 looks into the embrittlement phenomena occurring during welding, one of the most common processing conditions to which a material could be subjected. This book will prove useful to materials scientists and researchers.

    • Inglés
Fire Investigation is a practical guide on the basics of fire investigation, with emphasis on ascertaining the cause of fire. Three items that constitute an acceptable cause of fire are highlighted: the source of ignition; the material first ignited; and the defect, act or omission which led to the source of ignition and the material first ignited creating a fire. This book is comprised of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on sources of ignition and materials first ignited, paying particular attention to three temperature thresholds of combustible substances: flash-point temperature, fire-point temperature, and self-ignition temperature. Examples of sources of ignition are given, including ashes, soot, gas, and naked or open flame. Subsequent chapters deal with the reasons, motives, and methods of arson, as well as timing devices that may be used by arsonists; fire and non-fire explosions; variables that must be taken into account when trying to determine the rate of growth of a fire; and fatality occurring in a fire. The use of photographs and drawings in fire investigation is also considered, along with collection of samples and physical evidence from a fire scene and gathering of information through interviews. The final chapter presents abridged case histories of the six categories of arson. This monograph is written for students, fire officers and investigators, police officers, insurance investigators, and loss adjusters.

    • Inglés
Numerous models have been proposed for the study of the dynamic behaviour of cutting tools. An analysis of the main works published over the past 20 years reveal a lack of general methodology in the mathematical modelling of the dynamic cutting process (CP) and in the elastic structure (ES), as well as the absence of efficient and general methods for identifying the conditions under which the amplitudes of the vibration chatter between tool and workpiece can become problematic. This book provides a thorough review on the mathematical modelling and stability analysis of the dynamic machining system, presenting solutions for the practical problems that can be encountered. The practical points of the stability and instability of the DMS are discussed, together with various aspects of the modelling and identification of the CP and ES systems. The latest findings are examined in the context of a general study using matrix equations. Such a study on the matrix method is timely in view of the rapid spread in the use of mini and micro-computers.Base... on the matrix equations of the CP and ES systems, the general equations of the DMS with time-invariant parameters are established, and various procedures for the actual stability analysis of this system are presented. Many examples are accompanied by illustrations which also provide adequate practical instructions for other problems in the stability analysis of the DMS. The last part of the book deals with the modelling and stability analysis of the DMS with time-varying parameters, random parameters and random input. The work is addressed primarily to those interested in the design and exploitation of machine tools in both industry and research. It will also be of interest to applied mathematicians, and can be used as a reference book for advanced courses in mechanical engineering.
